THASSOS ISLAND
Thassos constitutes a green all around island in Northern Aegean. It is found in distance of 7-8 miles opposite to beach of Eastern Macedonia, very close to gulf of Keramoti and in the estuary of River Nestos.
The fact that it is found so much near the beach of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace seated Thassos as the ideal destination for your vacations, while you can combine them with visits in a lot of archaeological spaces and beautiful cities of Macedonia.
Today, Thassos numbers roughly 13.500 residents. It belongs in the Prefecture of Kavala and is constituted from 1 Municipality (Municipality of Thassos). Thassos is mountainous with amazing beaches with soft light blue until deep green seas and it is covered by dense forests with plane, firs, oaks and pines that often lead up to the end of sea, offering their blessed dew.
This is also the reason why it has called him “emerald island”, “green diamond of Aegean” and with many other names that perhaps are heard excessive in those who have not visited it. Beyond its natural beauty however, Thassos has to offer much more. In the island are maintained all the elements of Greek culture and Greek tradition, that have been lost in many Greek islands. The walls of fortress of ancient city, the temple of Apollo, the Ancient Theatre, the Citadel and the chapel of Dionysos with his choral monuments constitute some of the monuments which have been maintained by the past until today.
Thassos is also famous, for its rich reserves of minerals, as copper, lead, silver, zinc and iron. In combination with the timber for the ship yards was given the reason for the brilliant growth, the glamour and the progress of island at the duration of antiquity. The quarries of marble of Thassos were always famous. The total-white marble was used as basic material for the manufacture of many statues and buildings, and at the duration of season of Byzantine Empire for the construction of department of church of Agia Sophia in Istanbul, as well. According to Irodotos, Thassos owes her name in Thassos, son of the king of Finikes, Aginoras, which at the mythology reached in the island seeking his sister, Europe, that had been kidnapped by Dias. At the antiquity, the island of Thassos, that constituted the Greek State of Thassos, was characterized as “Athens of North”, because of the big blossoming that it knew.
Thassos became the objective for a lot of conquerors during many years. Two years afterwards the Conquering of City it led finally to the hands of Ottomans, and finally it was released from the admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis and incorporated in Greece in 1912.
