In the northern region of Thassos and just 3.5 km from the sea you will find perched at an altitude of 350 meters amphitheater built the beautiful village of Sotiros, which many characterize as the Pelion of Thassos.
The first inhabitants settled in the region, chose this location for many water sources, the fertile soil and the excellent climatic conditions.
As stated the old people of the village, Sotiros was very popular with tourists before 1940, for therapeutic purposes because the high mountains, dense pine forest, the fresh water sources made Sotiros an ideal holiday destination.
In recent years, like many other mountain villages, Sotiros has long abandoned because most of the residents moved in Skala Sotiros.
The most of the village houses was purchased and renovated.
The remarkable figures of Sotiros remained unchanged over time. Much interest is the Church of the Transfiguration, built in 1890.
Specifically, you can admire the hand-carved iconostasis made by monks of Mount Athos in the early twentieth century.
In the village there were many dependencies on Mount Athos and the relations between the locals and monks were excellent.
Also interesting are the chapels of St. John and St. George.
The same year that church of Transfiguration (1890) was built, a marble fountain was made at the source of Platanas at the center of the village under giant plane trees, which was declared a protected monument by the Ministry of Culture.
From the water of Platanas source was moving water mill that saved the residents during the difficult years of occupation, as they admit.
Remarkable interesting are the galleries of the old mines that operated around 1910, and offices (now ruins) which housed all departments of the administration of the mines.
